Emma is 6 today!
...well, actually while we were in Ethiopia her Birth Family informed us of her actual birthdate, so really she's been 6 for awhile, but as far as she knows today, March 14th is her birthday. We always knew the date was just an estimate...and now that she knows it as her birthday, really it's just not something we want to mess with. (at this moment)
Anyway, in preparation for her birthday post, I looked back to see what I posted last year for her birthday (so I didn't use the same photos) and I was so sad to see I didn't even mention it. My baby turned 5 and I didn't' even mention it.
We had JUST gotten back from Ethiopia.
Life was crazy.
We didn't really do much to celebrate her birthday last year because of all the crazy. And she was surprisingly ok with that. We had a pinatta, a few cousins, I think Jodie and her kids...and of course cake, Emma loves cake. Looking back, I think Emma was just so happy to have us home. To have Will home.
Well this year we decided turning 6 was a big deal. Emma deserved a party, so she had her first big friend birthday party!
Seriously it was so amazing! I don't want to post pictures because I don't know if the parents would like that, but just picture one happy little Emma smiling ear to ear with all her friends around her. Beautiful. I told her she was glowing, she smiled a huge smile and said "and I'm sparkling too!"
It was so great to see her with her friends. To see how much they all adore her and to see how sweet she is to each of them. I was blown away by her incredible behavior....(we've been having some major issues lately, that I can't talk about now of course because birthday posts are simply meant for gushing )
My sweet, sweet baby.
I do love her so.
And I am so proud of her.
Emma is crazy smart. She is reading at a 2nd grade level! (hello, she's in kindergarten!) She loves to ask questions...like deep, deep, meaning of life type questions. She's always got something swirling around in her little brain. She is very guarded with her feelings but once she lets you in, it's like she lets you in on the best kept secret. She is sweeter than sweet. But is also very strong, passionate and determined. She's not afraid to stick up for herself or for anyone else. I love that about her. She has grown and changed so much over the past year. Really becoming a thoughtful and responsible little girl. She is also very silly and loves to play especially with dinosaurs. She loves Will more than anything in the whole world! She absolutely lights up when she tells people that her baby brother is from Ethiopia just like her...
Emma is star of the week at school this week. She asked me if I could come in to talk to her class about Ethiopia, "because you were just there and I can't remember because I was only a baby." I gladly said yes. She's been helping me pick out pictures to share which has given us a great opportunity to really talk about Ethiopia and about being adopted. I love the pride that she feels for Ethiopia. I hope that is something that always remains a part of her. She has already talked about wanting to go someday when she "gets like 13" (her version of when she's older). I can't wait to make that trip with her.
I know I'm biased because I'm her mom, but seriously have you ever seen a more gorgeous 6 year old???
